Those with a heavy foot and, by extension, a lighter wallet, are helping fund traffic safety projects across the province.

Traffic signs written in Cree and speed displays powered by the sun are among projects to benefit from money raised by the province’s Traffic Safety Fund through Photo Speed Enforcement.

Funding for the Cree language street signs was applied for by Montreal Lake Cree Nation, which had $18,232 approved for the project. Both the Resort Village of Island View and the Town of Midale requested funds for solar-powered speed radar signs, and were approved for $20,990 and $14,070, respectively.

“The funding will help install pedestrian pathways, increase speed limit signage and improve school zone safety in rural, urban and Indigenous communities across the province,” the release reads. And for those who missed out on the last round of applications, Provincial Traffic Safety Fund grants are doled out twice a year. The current round opened on July 1, with an application deadline of Sept. 30.
