After the semis, it would have been a wise bet to pick a Jamaican sprinter to make the podium—or possibly sweep all three spots. Fraser-Pryce, Thompson-Herah, and Jackson had three of the four fastest times in round two, setting up one of the fastest finals in Olympic history. The new Olympic record narrowly edges the old mark of 10.62, which was run by Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988.
The last time the podium was swept in the 100 meters was in Beijing in 2008, when Fraser-Pryce won her first gold medal. Since that Olympics, a Jamaican has won the gold in each Games—two for Fraser-Pryce and two for Thompson-Herah.
