It's Election Day-- again. Here's what you need to know about today's runoffs.
- Polls have been open for roughly 30 minutes. Just a reminder you will need picture ID to vote.Headlining the day will be the GOP showdown to replace retiring Republican U.S. Senator Richard Shelby. The race pits Katie Britt, former CEO of the Business Council of Alabama and the top vote getter in the May primary, and Huntsville Congressman Mo Brooks.
The winner of the Britt and Brooks runoff will represent the Republican Primary in the November General election, facing Democrat Will Boyd, who is a pastor, and the Libertarian candidate, John Sophocleus, a former Auburn University professor.Retired educator Yolanda Flowers, of Birmingham, will face state senator and attorney Malika Sanders Fortier of Selma. Flowers got 33.87% of the vote in the May 24 primary and Fortier got 32.52% in a crowded field.
The winner will face Republican incumbent Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, who won the May 24 GOP primary race without the need for a runoff against a field of eight opponents, and Libertarian candidate Dr. James “Jimmy” Blake, a former member of Birmingham City Council.
