How electric car owners and RV park owners can prepare for EV road trips:
Share to twitterWhen electric cars like this go deep into the wilderness, RV Parks are already there and can provide charging if they offer a place to sleep.I made note of the fact that most RV parks have what you need to charge even large electric cars overnight.
In the tent, put an elevated air mattress on a cot base, or if you like, you can even install a real bed if the tent is semi-permanent. Toss in some other motel room amenities, like end tables. Install some lighting and electricity for charging phones. If it's a larger cabin tent, toss in a table and chairs, though most RV spaces have a picnic table. A camping sink connected to the water and sewer could be a nice touch, or even just draining to the ground if you provide biodegradable soap.
The heating will allow use of the tent in a wider range of weather. Most cars will draw no more than 32 amps per phase, so you can take an extra 8 amps per phase of continuous power for a heater. Another good option would be to have used trailers or even pop-up campers which can be rented out. Either have them set up elsewhere for rental to anybody, like camping cabins, or move them into and out of 50A RV spaces on demand.
I point this out because if you are full up, you might want to still allow the car to charge at a 50A spot occupied by an 30A RV if there is a place to put the car. To facilitate that, you can also use a 50A RV extension cord to reach the car -- the cars come with cords usually no more than 20 feet long.
A typical smaller car will not take more than about 40 to 50kwh in a night. This is similar to what a large RV might take on a hot day in the full 24 hours. If you pay the typical rate of around 11 cents/kwh, this will be about $5 of electricity. You can decide if you want to charge extra for that. Charge too much and they will go back to motel rooms and fast chargers. Electric SUVs like the Tesla Model X might take 80kwh in a night.Cars charging at full power will draw about 7KW -- 32 amps.
