Carreyrou adds that Balwani “projected an air of menace” at Theranos, acting coldly and dismissively toward employees. A friend of Holmes’s, he writes, “didn’t understand what her friend saw in this man, who was nearly two decades older than she and was lacking in the most basic grace and manners. All her instincts told her Sunny was bad news, but Elizabeth seemed to have the utmost confidence in him.
“He wasn’t who I thought he was,” Holmes said. “And I realized if I was going to fix the issues and allow the company to see through its potential, I had to do that without him in the company.”In addition to claiming that Balwani was controlling and manipulative, Holmes also testified that Balwani was both verbally and sexually abusive to her during their relationship.
“He had taught me everything that I thought I knew about business, and I thought he was the best businessperson I knew,” added Holmes. “I think that I didn’t question him in a way that I otherwise would have.”
