While it may be jarring at first, Wednesday's alerts are only a test.
WASHINGTON — Around 2:20 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, Oct. 4, cellphones, TVs and radios across the country will send out an alert as part ofCellphones should only receive the message once as part of Wednesday's test. For consumers, the message that appears on their phones will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
The reason is that they want to"preserve the unique purpose and effectiveness of the EAS Tones." Basically, the FCC wants people to take notice when they hear those familiar tones and not just tune them out. So while we can't share an example of what the emergency alert sounds like, chances are you've heard it before.
The test is slated to begin on Oct. 4 at around 2:20 p.m. Eastern time, but could be postponed to Oct. 11 if there’s severe weather or other significant events, according to FEMA.
