‘I do love Willie Nelson,’ she told the crowd, noting with a laugh that she recorded his hit song ‘Pancho and Lefty’ first.

and the rest of the team behind Oak Cliff’s superb Kessler Theater, the Longhorn is a pleasant place to see a concert.

With a five-foot-high stage, you can actually see the performers clearly, which isn’t always the case at music venues. The building, opened in 1950 as Bob Wills Ranch House, does have view obstructions from foundation poles, but it only affects a handful of concert-goers.The acoustics are better than you might expect from a big rectangular room with lots of hard surfaces.

There were minor air-conditioning issues, with a few pockets of the room super-chilled to the point of being uncomfortable. Glare was also a problem, with track lighting shining on some of the general admission seats, and video screens on either side of the stage distracting fans the whole show with the words “Emmylou Harris and her Red Dirt Boys.” As if we didn’t know who we’d come to see.

But most of those things can be easily fixed. With a capacity of 1,000 for seated concerts and 2,000 for standing shows, the Longhorn will offer stiff competition to similar-size Dallas music venues — a long list that includes House of Blues, the Granada Theater, Echo Lounge & Music Hall and the Studio at the Factory.

In a city that tends to bulldoze its past, the restored Longhorn Ballroom is a welcome new/old addition to the concert scene.. Thor Christensen is a former pop music critic for The Dallas Morning News and The Milwaukee Journal whose work has appeared in The New York Times and several books, including Musichound: The Essential Album Guide . He’s interviewed two Beatles, a pair of Rolling Stones and hundreds of musicians from Beyoncé to Bono to David Bowie.
