Brackett and Kasdan’s original draft of The Empire Strikes Back introduced Han Solo’s stepfather as one of the most powerful men in the galaxy.
Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan’s rough draft for The Empire Strikes Back originally played out a lot differently for Han Solo than the final movie does. Despite many differences, the bones of the film fans know and love are still peeking out through the unpolished script. The script still opens with a battle on a snow planet and then follows Luke Skywalker traveling to a muddy world to learn more about the Force from a wise, froglike creature named Minch.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In the rough draft, Vader is not Luke's father and is actually a completely different character. Luke would meet his father’s Force ghost halfway through the script, and they discuss his sister. Of course, in this version, Luke’s sister is not Leia and is instead named Nellith. Meanwhile, Han, Leia, and Chewie still flee from a Star Destroyer and end up navigating an asteroid field.
Empire Strikes Back's Original Plan For Han Solo's Father Instead of Luke dealing with daddy issues, the original draft of The Empire Strikes Back had Han Solo struggling to meet with his stepfather, Ovan Marekal. Marekal never makes a physical appearance in the original script, but is heavily referenced and was originally set up to be a major player in Return of the Jedi.
While Han continues to court Princess Leia, who is conflicted with her feelings for Luke, he is tasked by the Rebel Alliance to try and recruit Ovan Marekal to their cause. According to him, he doesn’t even recognize Marekal as his stepfather and is apparently on bad terms with him. Despite this, Leia says that Marekal was—at one point—fond of Han, and that Han could be the only one able to convince Marekal to join the Alliance.
How Star Wars Canon Honors ESB's Original Han Solo Plan At some point, all references to Ovan Marekal were cut from the script before the final draft of the movie. With Marekal gone, so too went any mention of Han’s parentage. Nevertheless, Disney’s recent canon has brought some of the original script back by officially naming Han’s father “Ovan” in the Han Solo & Chewbacca comic series. Of course, this version of Han’s father is not even close to being as powerful as the Emperor.
