Endorsement: Why Shirley Weber has earned a full term as California secretary of state [Opinion]
In the Trump era, with American elections being called into question without any justification or even evidence — sometimes by those running to be elections officials — secretary of state is suddenly a war cabinet position. Fortunately, California’s have been up to the test. Alex Padilla was elected to the role in 2014 and 2018 and when Gov. Gavin Newsom elevated him to fill the U.S. Senate vacancy created by California Sen.
While in the Assembly, Weber was a powerful advocate of police reform and of schools doing more to help struggling kids from poor households. She also was and is an impassioned supporter of voting. “This is a democracy, and you want to be heard,” she at Southwestern College this month. “You don’t give up your vote, because [then] you give up your power, and you empower other people to vote for you. And they may not vote in your favor.”
