The three largest Houston-based corporate law firms — Vinson & Elkins, Baker Botts and Bracewell — reduced the number of attorneys practicing in their Houston offices in 2022.

Houston-based corporate law firms Vinson & Elkins, Baker Botts and Bracewell reduced the number of attorneys practicing in their local offices in 2022 by nearly 10 percent, but the trio remained among the six largest firms operating here.survey of business law firms found that the 30 largest corporate law firms operating in Houston added 3.5 percent more attorneys in 2022 from the year before.

“Law firms follow the money, and more money was flowing into Texas the past year or so,” said Kent Zimmermann, a legal industry consultant with Zeughauser Group. “There was a shift in lateral hiring market in 2022. In 2021, law firms hired as many associates as they could just to help handle the boom in mergers and acquisitions deal-work.

V&E saw its lawyer numbers decline to 233 last year from 275 in 2021, but the Houston-based firm still had more lawyers in Houston than any other firm. V&E has 400 lawyers working in its other offices. Norton Rose Fulbright added four attorneys to have 187 in Houston, leaping over Houston-based Baker Botts to be the third-largest firm by head-count in Houston. In 2022, Baker Botts had a net loss of five lawyers in Houston and lost another 25 attorneys in Dallas and Austin.

Another Los Angeles-founded firm, Latham & Watkins, also scored tremendous growth in Houston in 2022, adding 16 attorneys and is now the fifth largest firm by lawyer head-count in Houston with 147.“We hire lawyers at this firm with an emphasis on growth,” said Wade Cooper, Jackson Walker’s managing partner. “It’s a credit to what we’re doing here that we’ve been able to attract so many good people.
