The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hopes to begin environmental remediation efforts at residential properties near Hammond’s former Federated Metals smelting facility in 2025.
“I think the 2025 field season is ambitious,” project manager Leslie Patterson told attendees of a Wednesday informational meeting held by the agency at Whiting High School. “That’s our target though. If we don’t aim for it, we won’t get there.” In September, the EPA added the Federated Metals site to the Superfund National Priorities List, a designation for areas where hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants can endanger human health and the environment.
