Dozens of women went to Dr. Donald Cline's Indianapolis fertility clinic in hope of getting pregnant. But what happened wasn’t what they signed up for. On sickpodcast sideeffectsnews, a doctor’s abuse of power, and the generation of lives he affected.
Liz’s story starts in 1976. She and her husband got married and moved from Illinois to Indianapolis. She was glad to live close to her family. And she had a new job counseling victims of sexual abuse. I just remember it was a very happy time and my life was pretty balanced. We'd have the weekends where we would play, and then go to work and try to get people to feel better.Liz always knew she wanted a family.
States proposed laws that would criminalize donor insemination, and declare children illegitimate if they were created using donor sperm. A judge in Chicago ruled that using donor sperm was equal to adultery. It was, quote, “contrary to public policy and good morals.” But slowly the idea of using donor sperm -- sperm from someone who wasn’t your husband -- that idea became more acceptable. Couples who were desperate to have children read news articles about happy families made possible with donor sperm. Patient interest in artificial insemination grew, and the medical community stepped up to meet the challenge. And in the late ‘70s, when Liz first went to a doctor for help, that’s what she was getting. Donor sperm. Liz monitored her menstrual cycles.
And it may sound strange, but it was common to use medical residents as donors, kind of like that doctor did back in the early 1900s. Residents were often close by, and they needed money. They’d give a sample and get cash in return. One doctor told us it was enough for a six pack and to pay for a date. St. Vincent hospital was across the street from Cline’s office, so Cline said he could find a resident there who looked like Liz’s husband. Brown eyes, brown hair, you’re about six foot tall.
I remember him being friendly at the first visit with my husband. After that it was just a procedural kind of thing. Yes. I don’t remember a conversation with Cline being anything warm or engaging or comforting so I could trust him more. I just remember it being procedural. You can set preferences for race, height, hair and eye color. Fairfax Cryobank lets you search by education level, or astrological sign. The California Cryobank tells you your donor’s favorite animal, and their dream vacation destination. Sperm donor clip:
