Saturday afternoon the Alaska Black Caucus (ABC) wrapped up its 5th annual Bettye Davis African American summit.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Black Caucus had its 5th annual African American summit Saturday at Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School. The event featured 26 vendor booths, including informational booths encouraging voter empowerment.
“We’re gonna be putting programs together to make sure that our community is participating in the process of voting,” Celeste Hodge Growden, the President for ABC, said. “It includes making sure they’re registered to vote, making sure they’re educated on the issues and then making sure they are participating by actually voting. It’s past time for talk. It’s about action.”
The event featured panel discussions, and ranged from groups such as the Divine Nine, NAACP and other Black-led organizational leaders. Panelists talked about education, economics, justice and health. Growden said the event gave people the opportunity to address local and state issues. “It moves us in a whole different direction,” she said. “Outside of what we’ve done in the past, it’s, it’s really good to connect with those that you don’t typically connect with. I mean, that’s how you build this thing.
