The pipeline for getting more Americans a college degree has sprung some leaks.

A plurality of students who earn bachelor’s degrees do so by starting out at a community college. This is especially true for first-generation students and those from lower-income households, especially minorities. In a real sense, community colleges represent their most likely pathway to a college degree. It is also becoming an important pathway for students from middle-income households, who seek to avoid taking on too much college debt and prefer to begin their college journey nearer to home.

In my work, I am seeing a change in how highly selective four-year colleges view the community college transfer pipeline. Both Dr. Robinson and I have observed that more four-year colleges are seeing community college transfers as an important part of their own enrollment strategies. For example, Princeton University reinstated transfer admissions in 2017, after having placed a moratorium on the transfer process in 1990.

Beyond social mobility, community colleges have also historically been important for economic development. Many community college students have work experience and are career-focused from the start of their post-secondary educational journey. I’ve spent the last 13 years working to expand college access, especially for underserved minority students who generally are the first-generation in their families to attend college. Part of that work has been necessarily devoted to clearing up misperceptions, as Dr. Robinson is committed to doing.
