WASHINGTON—Former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti passed a crucial hurdle to serve as U.S. ambassador to India, putting him on track tothat saw his nomination nearly derailed over questions about how he handled the conduct of a former top aide.
Mr. Garcetti, a Democrat who led the nation’s second most-populous city for nearly a decade, advanced past a procedural hurdle in a 52-42 vote. Several lawmakers were absent and a handful of Republicans and Democrats crossed the aisle, scrambling the math. A final confirmation vote in the chamber, which Democrats control with a narrow 51-49 majority, could come later Wednesday.
