BREAKING The JUICE mission will enter the orbit of Jupiter's largest moon, Ganymede, in eight years' time.
The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer mission launched atop an Arianespace Ariane 5 rocket from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana at 09:14 local time .
The JUICE mission is now making its way on an eight-year journey to Jupiter's largest moon, Ganymede. It will be the first probe to orbit another planet's moon.Impressively, ESA only had a one-second launch window for the launch of JUICE. This is because the mission relies on a specific alignment of the Solar System that will allow it to perform gravity-assist maneuvers around Earth and Venus to help it on its way to Jupiter.
The 2.67-ton JUICE spacecraft set out on its journey with 4 tons of fuel in its tanks. Though this is a lot of fuel for a comparatively small spacecraft, the JUICE mission requires a large amount of fuel for its gravity-assist maneuvers. This is a breaking news story and it will be updated as more information emerges. You can watch the livestream of the launch below
