Houston finally has a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race as Texas legislators target drag...
I have had the privilege of working with Mistress Isabelle many times. I have watched her entertain crowds on local and national stages with her big Texas hair, impeccable costuming, and take on drag “disco” — a type of dance with kicks, splits and pirouettes popularized by her drag family member,She always leaves the audience amazed. Yet, she is more than just an entertainer.
When asked about how it feels to be on the show, Mistress Isabelle said, “Watch out for the big girl. It’s not just being the first Houston contestant, it’s the fact that I can be the first plus-size contestant to be crowned.”For queer people of color, we have known drag to be a powerful avenue of creativity, love and acceptance.
We must find peace, safety, unity and belonging for all in the community. The fight against drag is a proxy battle in a war against rising LGBTQ acceptance and freer expression of who we want to be, differences and all. We need community members and allies to put pressure on their local state leaders, reaching out to them and informing them that we do not support these anti-LGBTQ bills.
“Like Latrice Royale said,” Mistress Isabelle told me on the phone enthusiastically, “Get up, look sickening and make them eat it!” Seeing Mistress Isabelle on screen and on the stage brings a light to a very dim next session of the legislature. Considering how long it has taken Houston to have a queen on the show and now having our hopes set on Mistress Isabelle, our community has shown we won’t stop until we are seen and celebrated – whether on MTV, or in the Texas Legislature., a grantee of the Gilead COMPASS Initiative® working to end HIV stigma across the U.S. South.
