After his breakdown in Euphoria season 2 episode 4, star Eric Dane confirms that viewers haven’t seen the last of Cal Jacobs.
Euphoria's Eric Dane says that this isn’t the end of Cal’s story. Introduced in the first episode of the HBO teen drama, Cal Jacobs is initially introduced as a lonely and predatory man that hooks up with younger partners in motel rooms. This routine leads him into an awkward encounter with another main character, Jules , which connects Cal and his family to the main story of Euphoria.
This thread continues into Euphoria season 2, which attempts to show a more sympathetic side to Cal. Beginning to unravel at the possibility that his secret will be revealed, flashbacks show that Cal once had romantic feelings for his male best friend. But as a teenager with a cold father, and afraid to express his sexuality, Cal never comes out. It’s a regret that eats at Cal, culminating in an explosive end to Euphoria season 2, episode 4, as Cal returns home drunk.
It would make sense that Euphoria isn’t done with Cal just yet. In the season 1 finale of the series, Maddy took a CD that potentially contained Cal’s illicit recordings. Series creator and showrunner Sam Levinson has yet to pay off that particular thread, though it remains a factor that is contributing to Cal’s increasingly unhinged actions. And given Maddy’s toxic relationship with Nate, it could come into play further down the road.
Historically, considering the long lineage of teen dramas, parents are often gradually phased out of the frame. The OC‘s Jimmy Cooper and the parents on the original 90210, for example, left their young kids behind with the flimsiest of excuses. At least for now, Euphoria looks to buck that trend by having its most dysfunctional adult stick around even when he would be well-advised to keep an eye on the exits. .
