Solvang, a small city in California that proudly claims to be 'The Danish Capital of America,' has come under fire from Denmark itself for some perceived intolerant behavior.
In March, Solvang councilmembers rejected a proposal made by a local LGBTQ resource center to hang rainbow banners and paint crosswalks in the town in celebration of Pride month later this year, theLord Mayor of Copenhagen Sophie Haestorp Andersen urged the California town to rethink its stance on LGBTQ issues.Solvang’s decision to reject the Pride decorations came after a heated council meeting in March.
In public comment, one Solvang resident pushed back on that claim, stating that he had been called a homophobic slur “more times in the last two years than I can count,” David Silva said. “It’s uncomfortable to be told that homophobia doesn’t exist in this area.”
