At the ForbesUnder30 Europe Summit in Berlin, zooming scooter startups Voi and Tier Mobility called for efficiency, more sustainable hardware—and a roundtable meeting with London mayor Sadiq Khan
. But to get units on the streets required penny-flipping, Hjelm says, that may not have been expected of U.S. counterparts Bird, Lime or Uber. “If you look at our revenue versus how much we’ve raised compared to the American players, we are four to eight times more efficient,” Hjelm said. “The companies that are most capital efficient and best at sustainability will win.”
Both Hjelm and Haas were quick to differentiate themselves from U.S. competitors in other ways. At TIER, Haas said he believes that the struggles of some recent entrants in the scooter market have come down to a lack of hardware expertise and superfluous spending. “It’s not a secret that the U.S. players will state their lifetime is three to four months,” Haas said.
Even in Europe, scooters remain a pricey proposition. Tier and Voi may not have raised the hundreds of millions that Bird and others gobble up. But in addition to Voi’s recent fundraises, Tier itself raised $60 millionfrom a sovereign fund of Abu Dhabi, reportedly its only non-European market.
Perhaps most significant in today’s scooter race: Europe’s players, at least Tier and Voi, appear to want to close ranks against interlopers from the U.S. It’s not the first time they’ve talked a feisty game. At another conference
