One of Europe's top VC firms is betting on the U.S. by appointing ex-Rdio cofounder and Skype product boss Carter Adamson a full-time partner in New York by alexrkonrad
. And Nordic investment shop Northzone's Pär-Jörgen Pärson moved to New York in 2013 to open up the firm's first U.S. office.
Venture capital firms have historically hesitated to appoint partners in cities far from their center of gravity, where they might struggle to remain on the pulse of a firm's thinking and internal politics while competing with rivals who have a local advantage."It is a reality" that firms have a mixed record with satellite partners, Tamura admits.
And by focusing on mid-stage investments in the U.S., Atomico hopes that U.S. firms will see it more as a partner and follow-on investor than an encroacher."Carter will be a great conduit," says Tamura."And as a firm we work quite closely with him." Adamson developed his internet chops at WP Studio, where alongside cofounder John Borthwick he helped create one of the first online guides to New York, an online art gallery and an early version of an online blog. After AOL acquired WP Studio in 1997, Adamson rose to director of product strategy before leaving to run product at Skype. The first entrepreneur-in-residence at Atomico, he cofounded online music startup Rdio, which gained early traction beforeto Spotify.
For startups and Atomico's peers, Adamson's promotion signals two things: the firm is serious about more U.S. investments in the future—and there's still some value to proximity, even in a world of increasingly remote work."Having him here in the U.S. makes things easier," says Mark Williamson, chief operating officer of San Francisco-based online learning startup MasterClass."It's easier to hop on a call, and he can get out here more to meet up.
