One former member of the 2017 Houston Astros team at the center of a sign-stealing scandal has issued a wide-ranging apology and acknowledged the team deserved to be punished harshly., catcher/designated hitter Evan Gattis said he understood why baseball fans are so angry, especially since the Astros went on to win the World Series.
“If our punishment is being hated by everybody forever, then ,” Gattis said. “And I don’t know what should have been done, but something had to be done. And I do agree with that, big time." Gattis, who retired after the 2018 season, said he felt bad for opposing pitchers who didn't get a fair chance to compete – and may have lost their jobs or been demoted as a result.After an MLB investigation, Astros manager A.J. Gattis said he isn't angry with former teammate Mike Fiers, whose comments to The Athletic first revealed the sign-stealing operation. Once the system was in place, he said, the"pack mentality" got out of control. “I don’t know how to feel yet. I don’t think anybody — we didn’t look at our moral compass and say, ‘Yeah, this is right.’ It was almost like paranoia warfare or something," Gattis said."But what we did was wrong."
