Son Goku's strength doesn't come from heroism.
Goku from the Dragon Ball franchise is a textbook example of an anime hero... well, at least according everyone other than his creator. Originally an alien sent to destroy Earth, a combination of head trauma and caring guardian instilled him with a sense of empathy. He grew to be a lovable oaf always pushing himself to the limit to get stronger, so he can better protect humanity.

Being a self-proclaimed "extremely twisted person", he wrote all of his characters to be darker, and more complex. This is where he feels Dragon Ball's anime fell short when it came to Goku.
Goku Wanted To Get Stronger For Himself, Not To Be A Hero A major part of Dragon Ball's plot is Goku's determination to get ever stronger. Saiyans are already an extremely powerful race, yet Goku upped his training so that he became even stronger than his people. In the anime, this determination is framed as stemming from his desire to protect his loved ones.
Though Toriyama's comments might surprise many, it makes sense when looking at the series. Goku is selfish. He often puts his training before anything else, wanting to prove himself as the strongest being out there. He actively prioritizes fighting challenging opponents over his family, even disrespecting his beloved Grandpa Gohan in favor of his sensei.
