The '90s TMNT theme song is an absolute classic, but there is one line in the song that just doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and the TMNT know it.
The original ‘90s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song is almost as iconic as the Turtles themselves, but there is one line in the song that has been mocked for decades–and even the Turtles admit that it’s awful.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles debuted as a gritty, black and white comic book from creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. However, when the two comic-makers wanted to expand the IP into toys and merchandise, the Turtles quickly became appropriate for all ages–and it was the best thing that could have happened to them. Originally, the Ninja Turtles were hardened killers with little to no differences between them.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT TMNT Openly Mocks Donatello’s Original Role on the Team In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Secret History of the Foot Clan #2 by Mateus Santolouco and Erik Burnham, the Ninja Turtles are chasing the Foot Clan after the gang of evil ninjas kidnapped a history professor in the hopes that he could uncover something about the Foot Clan’s past–something that would be useful to the Shredder.
In the context of this comic, Raphael is referencing a screen name Donatello had, which was “duzmachines”. However, the comment was also meant as a meta reference to the original TMNT cartoon theme song describing Donny’s role on the team. The line in the song is “Leonardo leads, Donatello does machines. Raphael is cool, but rude. Michelangelo is a party dude”. Each line makes sense for its respective Turtle, but Donatello’s is decidedly odd.
The point of the theme song was to quickly tell audiences what the Ninja Turtles were all about while still being a catchy tune ‘90s kids would have stuck in their heads for the next three decades, so even though ‘does machines’ isn’t super conversational, it got the point across. However, that doesn’t forgive the line for being undoubtedly strange and worthy of mockery, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles themselves would agree.
