Star Trek: The Next Generation is one of the most beloved series in the Star Trek franchise, but it suffered several cast departures during its seven season run. The first live action spinoff from Star Trek: The Original Series, TNG had a tall task at the outset, as it had to convince a passionate fan base that Star Trek could thrive without franchise legends like Captain James T. Kirk and Spock . Many were convinced the entire project was doomed to failure before it ever began.
Crosby noted the show's improved quality in its later seasons and made it known she was open to a return. She began guest starring on the series with season 3's classic episode "Yesterday's Enterprise," playing an alternate reality version of Tasha. She would return as the half-Romulan daughter of that version of Tasha over multiple episodes as well, and one final time as Tasha herself in the series finale "All Good Things.
4 Diana Muldaur After Gates McFadden departed, the USS Enterprise-D was in need of a new doctor. Diana Muldaur, who had played multiple roles on Star Trek: The Original Series, was cast as Dr. Katherine Pulaski. An obvious riff on TOS's Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy , Pulaski never quite fit with the rest of the TNG cast.
When producers began development on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, it was decided early on that O'Brien would be one of the spinoff's main characters. O'Brien departed the USS Enterprise-D in the DS9 series premiere "Emissary" to begin his new adventure. Meaney would go on to be one of Star Trek's most prolific actors - not bad for an unnamed extra.
