Umeka Treymane Myers, 50, pleaded guilty to theft from a program receiving federal funds in June 2022. In addition to her sentence of two years and nine...

According to the U.S. attorney’s office, if an employee makes an error processing a debit card, the software generates an error message, which only a lead clerk or supervisor, like Myers, can clear. But the U.S. attorney’s office said after overriding the errors, Myers used released inmates’ booking numbers to create new and duplicate debit cards, entering the same amount from the card issued to the released person onto the newly created card.

The money on the duplicate debit cards was pulled from a Dallas County-controlled inmate fund, authorities said.Myers used dozens of the cards in Texas, Louisiana, Nevada, Maryland and New York, the U.S. attorney’s office said. “Ms. Myers callously took advantage of a program receiving federal funds to support her personal bank account,” FBI Special Agent in Charge Chad Yarbrough wrote in a statement. “Further, as a supervisor in a government role, she also selfishly risked damaging the credibility of hard-working civil servants that support our county infrastructure.

“I commend our colleagues at Dallas County for their full cooperation in rooting out greed and corruption in programs that are funded by taxpayer monies.”Advertisement
