WASHINGTON—Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld said Monday that he would challenge President Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, beginning a long-shot quest against an incumbent with avid support from the party base.
“It is time to return to the principles of Lincoln—equality, dignity and opportunity for all,” Mr. Weld, 73 years old, said in a written announcement that made no mention of Mr. Trump. Instead, he referenced “great political strife” and blamed both parties for a “win at all cost” mentality.
