Ex-Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder’s former right-hand man has taken the witness stand in Householder’s ongoing corruption trial, delivering what could be key testimony for prosecutors.
CINCINNATI — who pleaded guilty to a racketeering chargeLongstreth is the second co-defendant in the case to testify against Householder as part of a plea deal with prosecutors. Last week, Juan Cespedes, a lobbyist for a company that benefitted from a 2019 energy law that’s central to the case,, implicating Householder and Matt Borges, a lobbyist former Ohio Republican Party chairman who’s fighting the charges with Householder.
The play involved recruiting pro-Householder Republican candidates to run for open Ohio House seats who then would vote for Householder as speaker, helping him oust a rival lawmaker, Ryan Smith. Longstreth also was asked to describe what it meant to be a “casket carrier” — a term Emily Glatfelter, the lead federal prosecutor in the case, used in her opening statement when the trial began on Jan. 23. He said it meant Householder wanted “a loyal team around him that will be with him until his death.” He reiterated Householder and political team cared about two things: loyalty and winning.
Longstreth also said Householder was very detail-oriented, wanting to know every piece of information he could. Illustrating this point, Longstreth shared a disconcerting meeting he had with Householder in Spring of 2017, the early days of Householder’s campaign for speaker.
