Ex-SF Giants great designated for assignment by Diamondbacks, per source
PHOENIX — Madison Bumgarner, who helped the San Francisco Giants win three World Series titles, has been designated for assignment by the Arizona Diamondbacks following his latest shaky start, according to a person familiar with the decision.
The Diamondbacks made the move Thursday, a day after Bumgarner allowed seven runs in three innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the cut has not been announced. The 33-year-old has allowed at least five runs in three of his four starts and dropped to 1-3 with a 10.26 ERA after his latest blowup in St. Louis.
Bumgarner is owed roughly $34.4 million on the remainder of his contract, including $20.4 million this season. If he clears waivers, he would be clear to sign with any team for a prorated share of the league minimum of $720,000.
