The legal ramifications from Volkswagen’s 5-year-old diesel emission scandal never seem to end as the ex-CEO faces new criminal charges in Germany
Martin Winterkorn, former CEO of the German car manufacturer 'Volkswagen', was charged Monday by a German prosecutor for failing to tell regulators and customers in a timely manner that the company intentionally manipulated diesel emissions during testing in Europe and the United States. The legal ramifications from Volkswagen’s five-year-old diesel emission scandal never seem to end.
The charges, filed in the German city of Braunschweig allege Winterkorn violated fraud, breach of trust and competition laws by failing to act after the manipulation of diesel emission tests was first discovered in May 2014. The company declined to comment on the latest charges because the prosecutor named Winterkorn, but not the company.
But the latest charges in German carry a maximum possible sentence of 10 years in prison. The Braunschweig prosecutors said investigations continue into another 36 possible suspects in the diesel emissions scandal.
