Expect to win? Ugly opening homestand could mean Rangers are expecting too much | Evan_P_Grant

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Martin Perez delivers against the Los Angeles Angels in the first inning during a baseball game on Sunday, April 17, 2022, in Arlington, Texas. After a game like Sunday, though, it requires some follow up: Exactly how?

“We didn’t play well enough at all to win the game,” Woodward said, noting it was the case for the second straight day. “The leadoff walks, the mistakes; we’re just not playing well. We’ve got to fix those and play better if we expect to compete and win major league baseball games. We’re just not doing really anything well right now.”

Nothing spelled out the issues better than the third inning. Martin Perez walked No. 9 hitter Tyler Wade with one out, allowed a stolen base, struck out Shohei Ohtani and then made a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. It was the first of each, but certainly not the last. Rangers pitchers walked seven hitters and allowed three steals, and the fielders made three errors. Oh, and there was a passed ball, too.

When the Rangers weren’t giving up free bases to the star-studded top of the Angels lineup, they were getting mauled by the bottom third of the order. What’s worse: If something can be deemed a pattern nine games into the season, it’s that the bottom of opponents’ lineups have had outsized contributions against Texas pitchers.
