NEW YORK - Americans have spent the past three years debating what impact President Donald Trump’s racially charged remarks have had on society.

An analysis of Reuters/Ipsos public opinion polling from 2016 to 2019 finds that racial anxieties among white Americans have softened since 2016, when Trump was running for office. And survey respondents who reject racial stereotypes are more interested in voting than those who express stronger levels of anti-black or anti-Hispanic biases.

POLITICAL ENGAGEMENT: Respondents were asked, “using a 1-to-10 scale, where 10 means you are completely certain you will vote and 1 means you are completely certain you will NOT vote, how likely are you to vote in the next presidential election” Those respondents who rated themselves as an 8, 9 or 10 on the scale were combined as a single group of politically engaged respondents.
