Can new and rehabbed housing spur development of all types on Cleveland's southeast side?
Cuyahoga County Land Bank Charities this summer announced its plan to build or rehab hundreds of houses in Mount Pleasant, a much-needed boost for the area.
Roshawn Sample, the executive director of UMDC, said that the Walt Collins Veteran Housing & Service Center will break ground by early November. Walt Collins is to include 11 residential units and will be located on East 98th and Harvard to East 102nd Street Both neighborhoods are predominately Black at around 95%. Economic issues persist in the neighborhoods with about 31,000 residents, roughly split between the two areas.Both have thousands of people living below the poverty line, including more than 40% of the children.
“I really enjoyed my childhood in this community, and I wouldn’t change a thing back then. Crime was not a big topic of discussion then and it saddens me to see how things have drastically changed over the years.”Mount Pleasant was named for its countryside views as the area was once predominately rural and occupied by European farmers. According to the, the area had remained rural through the early 1920s.
“We’d like to see affordable housing meet the housing need, but we also want to see improved neighborhoods,” Frangos said. “When you’re reestablishing the tax base in these areas, it promotes retail investment and job creation. Housing is the starting point for not only stabilizing families, but stabilizing a neighborhood.”and Miles Avenue. Newburgh had also been home to farms and orchards.
