Facebook has taken its most aggressive step to root out incendiary content by banning prominent controversial media figures including Alex Jones, Louis Farrakhan and Milo Yiannopoulos

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was banned from Facebook after hosting Proud Boys founder and designated hate figure Gavin McInnes on his show.: Facebook took its most aggressive step to root out incendiary content Thursday by banning prominent controversial media figures including Alex Jones, Louis Farrakhan and Milo Yiannopoulos.

Facebook’s ban covers six individuals and InfoWars. The six people are Louis Farrakhan, Alex Jones, Paul Nehlen, Milo Yiannopoulos, Paul Joseph Watson and Laura Loomer.A Facebook spokesperson said in a statement that it bans individuals and organizations “regardless of ideology.” That part appears to be true. The ban targets right-wing figures Alex Jones, Milo Yiannopoulos, Paul Joseph Watson, Laura Loomer and Paul Nehlen. But it also includes Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

While individual posts or pages created by InfoWars and Alex Jones have been removed in the past, the full ban comes after Jones hosted Gavin McInnes, the founder of far-right group Proud Boys and a designated hate figure on the platform, on his show, a Facebook spokesperson said. These figures, the spokesperson said, violated its policy regarding “Dangerous Individuals and Organizations.” The company said these figures called for or directly carried out acts of violence against people based on factors like race, ethnicity or national origin; were a self-described or identified follower of a hateful ideology; used hate speech or slurs in their social media profiles; or previously had content removed for hate speech.
