Here's the real reason Facebook is changing its name to Meta and going after the metaverse
"Building our social apps will always be an important focus, but right now our brand is so tightly linked to one product it can't possibly represent everything we're doing today, much less in the future," Zuckerberg said on Thursday at the company's annual Connect developer conference.
In addition to breaking out Facebook Reality Labs into its own financial reporting unit, the company said during its third-quarter earnings call on Monday that it is giving the segment $10 billion in funding this year . The division, already at about 10,000 employees, will also get another 10,000 in Europe. Facebook's"Family of Apps," money-making products that include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, will have its finances reported separately.
During Connect, he reiterated those comments, adding:"We expect to invest many billions of dollars for years to come before the metaverse reaches scale."
