Doors across Capitol Hill are shutting on Facebook’s army of lobbyists as the company tries to move past one of its most serious political crises ever

“The problem right now is that the perception of the company is so negative that, even as the company’s working on things these members would care about and making improvements, they’re not receptive to hearing about it,” Patterson said. When asked for a response to this depiction of its interactions with Congress, Facebook said Thursday that it has been “calling for updated regulations ourselves” for over two years.
Facebook is still one of the wealthiest U.S. companies, with about 200 million American users, and is not without allies — even if few in Congress are speaking publicly on its behalf these days. President Joe Biden has hiredwho previously worked for Facebook. If anything, lawmakers including Sen. Amy Klobuchar have argued that the tech giant’s lobbying apparatus has had too much power over Congress’ efforts to rein in Silicon Valley.
Behind the scenes, Facebook representatives also email aides any time their bosses mention the company in public. The company responds quickly to lawmakers’ inquiries and sets up frequent briefings between congressional aides and Facebook’s policy staffers to discuss concerns ranging from online misinformation to privacy.
