Android spyware steals passcodes and snoops on calls. Posing as PornHub , Google and other massively popular apps, researchers say the malware was created by a major Russian surveillance contractor.

The researchers found STC’s spyware hoovered up passwords and turned phones into listening devices. The tool, known as Monokle, can record home screens when phones are locked in order to scoop up passwords, snoop through predictive-text dictionaries to learn the target’s interests, record calls and eavesdrop through the infected phone’s microphone. The malware has been targeting Android phones since 2016, with a spike in activity early last year.

Adam Bauer, Lookout senior staff security intelligence engineer, said it was impossible to tell what specific groups of English speakers were targeted, given the breadth of appeal of those apps. “It’s very difficult to derive conclusions because they’re very popular apps,” Bauer added.

And that market where I used to buy candy after school is a cell phone store now. Huh. I guess it has been a long time.” Sources confirmed Brundage later sat motionless for 40 minutes while staring at the house his high school girlfriend’s family moved out of eight years ago.
