Farmers Branch City Council headed in right direction | Opinion
Bill Glancy will serve as mayor of Farmers Branch until the May 6 election. The Farmers Branch City Council this week took some needed, important steps toward showing it can be civil.
At its meeting Tuesday night, the council voted unanimously to hire an outside attorney to investigate ethics violations complaints against former Mayor Robert Dye, who abruptly resigned on HalloweenThat council member, Richard Jackson, told us that before the council meeting he was “given the option” by city staff and other council members to withdraw his complaints in light of Dye’s quick exit. Jackson told us one other council member asked him outright to drop the complaints altogether.
We were also glad to see the council’s unanimous vote to appoint former Mayor Bill Glancy, 81, to take over the last several months of Dye’s term until the next mayoral election on May 6. We feared the council would appoint someone planning to run for mayor, giving that person an unfair leg-up with voters with a “keep Mayor So-and-So” campaign. Instead the council appointed a capable and tested Farmers Branch public servant with presumably no plans to run again.
There are still plenty of issues in this northwest Dallas County suburb that threaten to divide its 36,000 residents and City Hall. The recent approval of a controversial redistricting map stands out as a big one. But at least the council this week showed it can be civil in its disagreements.
