A high school football playoff game in Orlando was cut short Saturday night when a fatal shooting in the parking lot left one person dead and another injured.
A parking lot shooting ended the Jones-Wekiva high school football playoff game in the fourth quarter on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022 in Orlando.
Orlando police chief Eric Smith said gunshots were heard during the fourth quarter of the regional quarterfinal between Wekiva and host Jones High School, triggering panic among those in the stands and on the field. Officers responded to the north parking lot and found two victims around 8:22 p.m. ET on Saturday, Smith said. One individual died and the other was taken to a hospital.
Emergency responders were seen providing chest compressions and breathing assistance to one shooting victim while another received medical attention to his leg,Jones head coach Elijah Williams told Gainesville the shooting"wasn't Jones kids" but was a"neighborhood thing that spilled over to the parking lot."
"We had a minute left in the game. It was real senseless," Williams said."At that point, we just wanted to keep both teams safe. We laid on the ground, hid in the back over there. It's just very unfortunate and takes away from a hard-fought competition."
