One topic of discussion that emerged at the dinner table was Dogan-Boyner’s insistence that she study abroad. The answer from her father was a firm no. So, Dogan Boyer secretly studied English for two years instead of preparing for the Turkish college entrance exam. She then purposely bombed the exam by leaving it blank. “My father was waiting outside,” Dogan-Boyner says, recalling the day of the examination.
Dogan-Boyner started running an Internet group, Dogan Online, within Dogan Holding, but had difficulty getting resources for her ideas from headquarters. Her dad nominally supported her efforts, but Dogan-Boyner bumped up against stodgy senior executives inside the company. She wanted to oversee a transition of the newspapers to digital and also to invest in unrelated online enterprises with the understanding that some of them would work out and others would not.
Dogan-Boyner set up offices in a small Istanbul apartment, but it wasn’t a clean break. She kept her job as head of a unit that ran the smaller newspapers owned by Dogan Holding, while also managing Dogan Online. After a few years, Dogan-Boyner realized that her online venture would never work unless she dedicated herself to it full-time, so 2008 she quit her father’s business.
