Facing government shutdown, federal workers in North Texas are reaching out to local food banks and community centers that offer assistance to those in need.
Many of the civilian workers will be sent home and barred from performing their duties. Most of those serving in the military or national security roles, such as TSA officers like Jones, will be required to work but won’t be paid for their labors until the shutdown ends.
“We perform national security functions and if somebody makes a mistake people could die,” Jones said. “The last thing you want to do is have these guys out there making decisions when they’re like ‘hey, my head’s not clear.’”Jones estimated about 1,600 TSA workers, most of them officers, work at DFW and Love Field. Most frontline officers live paycheck to paycheck and could face financial disaster from a prolonged shutdown, he said.
Asked if he’d be doing that, Cornyn said he would support a provision that said Congress doesn’t get paid during shutdowns. Cruz took to the Senate floor Wednesday urging the Senate to pass by unanimous consent a measure that would ensure those in uniform continue collecting pay during a shutdown.
