Abortions are largely banned in Missouri, but there are exceptions for medical emergencies. In Kansas, when Farmer visited the hospital, abortions were still legal up to 22 weeks. It’s unclear why the University of Kansas Health System refused to offer Farmer one. That likely won't be enough to convince hospitals and doctors that they should provide abortions in states where they're operating under the threat of prison time or large fines if they terminate a pregnancy, said Mary Ziegler, a law professor at the University of California, Davis.
