The U.S. Department of Commerce announced plans to spend $2.6 billion in Inflation...

While it is still unclear how much of the newly announced cash Texas-based organizations would receive, a relatedsaw $32 million in projects approved that will touch the Texas coastline, tackling marine debris and preserving coastal wildlife habitats.

At Galveston's Flower Garden Banks sanctuary, junk such as piping and an old buoy system are interfering with the sensitive benthic ecosystem hundreds of feet underwater, according to The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation's conservation director T.J. Tate. The foundation will use some of the grant funding it was awarded to carefully remove the high-priority debris.

A sunk ship"has not necessarily been cleaned, so it has things that are eventually going to leach into the water... that's one of the reasons you want that vessel removed," said Amanda Nalley, the alliance's communications manager. These already-approved projects were among 149 nationwide announced in April, which will cost NOAA $562 million.

"This massive investment will go a long way in helping NOAA prepare communities for natural disasters," U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves said in a statement.
