'Widespread discontent of the last year maybe has plateaued and is relenting slightly,'...

The “wrong track” number for the state is down to 46 percent. The poll hasn’t found a lower number since June of 2021.The number of Texans who believe the country and the state are on the “wrong track” has decreased significantly from peaks measured over the summer, polling released last week from the University of Texas at Austin showed. Those numbers haven’t been lower in more than a year.Gov.

Over the last year, Texans’ perception of the state of the state and the country had plummeted, possibly in response to the Uvalde mass shooting, the threat of an economic downturn, inflation, heated campaign-season political rhetoric or other factors. The nadir was June of this year, when 59 percent of Texans said the state was on the “wrong track” and 76 percent said so of the country.

Despite the upbeat poll numbers, Henson said the state’s Republican political leadership should beware of some warning signs in theEvery five years, the poll asks whether the state government in Austin “mostly addresses” or “mostly ignores” the needs of Texans. In 2017, 49 percent said the government did a good job, while 38 percent said it did not. The poll surveyed 1,200 registered voters from Dec. 2 to Dec. 12, and the margin of error is 2.83 percent.

“I think what these results show is that there is a cost to Republican officeholders in terms of public support. That cost may not be manifesting itself in elections, but there’s ample evidence that if you’re not a Republican, you are pretty likely to feel like state government is letting you down. And even if you are a Republican, a quarter or a third, depending on how you ask it, are also not particularly satisfied,” he said.
