Shares of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Inc.

fell in after-hours trading Wednesday following a Wall Street Journal report that its $40 billion merger bid for Renault SA RNO, -0.65% had been withdrawn. The Journal said Renault's alliance partner, Japan's Nissan Motor Co. 7201, +0.54% had refused to support the deal. Fiat Chrysler shares sank more than 3% immediately after the report was published.
