More than 50 filmmakers signed a letter in support of better benefits for parents, especially new mothers, in preparation for the 72nd annual Directors Guild of America Awards:

Directors Guild Of America Awards. More than 50 filmmakers and actors signed a letter in support of better benefits for parents, especially new mothers, in preparation for this weekend’s 72nd annual Directors Guild of America Awards.

Currently, the DGA requires an income minimum earned over the past 12 months to retain benefits. The letter urges the DGA to introduce maternity leave and reform its benefits package for all parents, from mothers to adoptive parents. Beyond benefits, she discusses the stigma pregnant women face when applying to directing jobs. “Subsequently, women are penalized for having children in a way that their male counterparts are not,” Dimmock wrote. Later she points out the added stress of loosing benefits and health insurance has negative impacts on mothers and children alike.
