A year into new college football era, much left unsettled
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey holds his opening press conference to begin SEC Media Days at the College Football Hall of Fame on Monday, July 18, 2022, in Atlanta. One year ago, Baylor assumed it had a long-term future with Texas. Southern California and Rutgers thought they shared nothing in common. And as far as most people knew, neither Nick Saban nor Jimbo FisherFifty-one-and-a-half weeks of superconference realignment chatter has changed a few things.
Was this just the beginning of a scenario in which the SEC and the Big Ten would swallow every major program that matters? And would massive realignment, combined with the long-overdue rule changes allowing players to accept name, image and likeness compensation, mean that college football would look more and more like a version of the NFL with marching bands and student sections?
“We're going to take a step back from the model introduced and rethink the approach, number of teams, whether there should be any guarantee for conference champions at all,” Sankey said. “Just earn your way in.” Take Saban, for example. Two months ago, he started a firestorm by claiming at a gathering of Alabama business leaders that “A&M bought every player on their team — made a deal for name, image, and likeness. We didn’t buy one player.” But during his SEC media days session on Tuesday?“Name, image and likeness is not an issue for us at Alabama,” Saban told reporters in Atlanta. “And our players, I think, did better than anybody in the country last year.
