The Spurs may be in the middle of the rebuild, but they won’t anger the “basketball gods” by tanking.ATLANTA — As a devoted disciple of Gregg Popovich’s since about, oh, five meals ago, Devonte’ Graham now is qualified to proselytize. Traded to the Spurs on Thursday afternoon and established as their leading scorer on Friday night, Graham counts himself as a true believer in his new franchise’s message, which some might compare to karma.
But as Graham knows already, Popovich’s reverence for the deities he calls the “basketball gods” is real — and long-standing. And if anything heartens the Spurs during another miserable losing streak, it’s the thought that another cosmic reward is on its way.But because they’ve never stopped believing that “the right way” matters.
And Popovich? In his head, he realizes victories are counterproductive, but he just can’t help himself. Friday, after the Spurs rallied from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime and then took a three-point lead, rookie Malaki Branham dribbled into a trap and got himself stuck, leaving the Spurs in a mess that ended with a shot-clock violation.“Malaki,” Popovich could be seen mouthing on the TV broadcast.
Graham, the fifth-year guard whose contract was dumped by the Pelicans along with four second-round picks in their deal for Richardson, made 6 of 15 3-pointers and scored 31 points, the most ever by a player making a Spurs debut. He wasn’t acquired to help San Antonio win games this season, necessarily. He tried his best to do it anyway.
