Chuck Blount, who died after a brief illness at 47, was irrepressibly upbeat and unshakable belief in himself no matter what who shared his love of life and food with his Express-News co-workers and readership.
Chuck Blount took pride in his barbecue and sharing his love of food and life with Express-News colleagues and readership. Even in his fury, the old coach couldn’t keep a straight face. One second, he looked ready to strangle everybody. The next, he was laughing as hard as the rest of us.“Which one of y’all is putting divots in my track?” the man with a stopwatch and a whistle demanded to know, and the answer was somehow dumber and funnier than he ever could have imagined.
So on our “dinner break,” we drove to Trinity to confirm. Nineteen years later, the official time of Chuck’s run remains in dispute. But the details of the spectacular conclusion, when in his baggy Levi’s he tumbled so hard through the finish line that he left a gash in the running surface, are the stuff of legend.
Preposterous confidence. Irrational, even. Sometimes it was hilarious . Sometimes it was downright inspiring. Later, when newspaper staffs kept shrinking and Chuck recognized that page designers might not have the best job security in the world, he reinvented himself again. This time the guy with no formal culinary training and little reporting experience decided to become the staff barbecue guru.
What made him think people would care about what he had to say about post-flop betting, or about choosing the right char-coal, or about the lagers and ales he evaluated in his “75-second beer review” Facebook series?
