Jeremy Sochan generated some thrills for Spurs fans during the Rising Stars Game on Friday. But the Spurs will need someone playing on Sunday next year to really generate some buzz.After Kevin Durant demanded a trade to his fourth NBA team in eight seasons, some called him a ring-chaser. That might have been unfair.
In 2003, Tim Duncan was San Antonio’s lone representative, but his sidekick was a center who’d been to 10 All-Star games in the previous dozen years. And in 2014, after Parker was the only Spur in New Orleans, he returned to a roster that included two Hall of Famers and a corn-rowed kid who’d become an All-Star regular.
In the best-case scenario, they’ll do it on multiple fronts. If Sochan, the cheeky power forward who’s made Popovich fall in love with trash-talking, continues on his current trajectory, he might take care of part of that leap himself. Chances are, he won’t make it to Sunday next season, and maybe not the one after that.
Another option is to get another leap from one of the Sochan teammates who now count as Spurs veterans. Could Keldon Johnson, who’s added new pieces to his game every offseason so far, ever get there? Could Devin Vassell? Both are long shots, but perhaps.
